Communities of Practice > Trauma, Racism & Equity

This Community of Practice seeks to reflect on our values and experiences, increase knowledge and skills related to trauma, racism, and equity (TRE) in schools, and learn strategies to improve school and broader policies related to TRE. Sessions will provide an opportunity to practice discussing issues related to TRE and build a network of allies. We will co-create our space and share the facilitator role throughout the process.

This foundational course clarifies key terminology related to immigration status, explores the contextual factors influencing migration and adaptation, and identifies strategies for fostering belonging and support in school settings. Through chapters on learning the language, listening to personal stories, creating welcoming spaces, and engaging families, you will discover practical ways to connect with and empower newcomer students and their families.

This course builds on foundational knowledge to offer actionable strategies for supporting newcomer students and their families. Learn how to create meaningful connections and foster a sense of community, implement techniques to ensure safety, and teach emotion regulation skills to empower students to navigate challenges with resilience.

Dive deeper into applying tiered support systems for newcomer students. This course focuses on trauma-informed practices for Tier 2 interventions, provides guidance on Tier 3 interventions and crisis resources, and emphasizes the importance of building self-care and community care practices for sustainable support.

Updated regularly, this section offers a collection of tools and materials to enhance your learning and application of strategies. These resources complement the courses in this series, helping you create welcoming, inclusive, and safe spaces for newcomer students and families in your school community.

A community of practice can be a great opportunity to collect and share artifacts that provide tangible evidence of shifts in thinking and practice. Artifacts could include samples of student work, photos of students at work, samples of teacher-made materials, and collections of instructional materials.
